Asano was born September 22, 1980, and won first prize in the 2001 GX competition for young manga artists. He built a reputation for character-driven realism: Solanin became a feature film in 2010, starring Aoi Miyazaki, and that same year Yomiuri Shimbun called him "one of the voices of his generation." Goodnight Punpun and Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction followed, cementing his range from intimate drift to horror-tinged unraveling.
