Infante of Spain (1913-1993)
He spent four decades waiting for a throne that never came — his father lost it to the Republic, and when Spain finally restored the monarchy, they crowned his son instead.
Juan Carlos Teresa Silverio Alfonso de Borbón y Battenberg was born 20 June 1913, third son of King Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg. His father designated him heir, but Alfonso XIII was replaced by the Second Spanish Republic in 1931, sending the family into exile. For over forty years Juan claimed the throne as Juan III, maintaining the royalist cause from abroad while Spain lurched through civil war and dictatorship. When the constitutional monarchy was finally restored in 1975, it was his son Juan Carlos I who took the crown. He died 1 April 1993, the king who never reigned.
