About this person
Ilya Aleksandrovich Varlamov was born 7 January 1984 and built an audience as a photographer and urbanist before launching the YouTube news program What's Happening? His blog and videos took apart Russian urban planning failures and tracked opposition marches, work that crossed into territory the government preferred left alone. The documentation led to political persecution and criminal charges. He expanded into travel blogs covering locations worldwide, and in 2018 founded the "Attention!" foundation to preserve historical heritage in Russia. The lens stayed trained on what others looked away from.
