About this person

Ilham Aliyev was born 24 December 1961, the son of former Azerbaijani president Heydar Aliyev. He became president on 31 October 2003 through an election defined by irregularities, shortly before his father's death, after a two-month stint as prime minister. A 2009 constitutional referendum removed term limits, allowing him to win re-election in 2013, 2018, and 2024. His family has enriched itself through stakes in state-run banks, construction, telecommunications, and the oil and gas sector that bankrolls the regime. In 2012, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project named him "Person of the Year" for prominence in stories on crime and corruption; in 2017, the Azerbaijani laundromat revealed his involvement in a money-laundering scheme to pay off European politicians. The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict escalated into full war in 2020, and following a military siege and renewed offensive in 2023, his forces expelled all Armenians from the territory and reincorporated it into Azerbaijan.
