About this person
Ignacio José de Allende y Unzaga was born January 21, 1769, and rose to captain in the Spanish Army stationed in New Spain. He began attending the clandestine meetings hosted by Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez, where talk of independence from Spain moved from whisper to plan. When the revolt broke he fought alongside Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in the opening campaign of the independence struggle, then inherited leadership of the rebellion as Hidalgo's role diminished. Spanish colonial forces caught him in Coahuila. He was executed for treason in Chihuahua on June 26, 1811.
