Western Asian Mongol ruler (c. 1217–1265)
Grandson of Genghis Khan who ended the Abbasid Caliphate and destroyed Baghdad in 1258, closing the Islamic Golden Age. His westward sweep through Persia founded the Ilkhanate and redirected the center of Islamic power from Mesopotamia to Cairo.
Born around 1217 to Tolui and the Keraite princess Sorghaghtani Beki, Hulagu was one of four brothers that included Möngke Khan, Kublai Khan, and Ariq Böke. Leading Mongol forces into Western Asia, he greatly expanded the empire's southwestern reach and established the Ilkhanate in Persia. His army sacked and destroyed Baghdad, extinguishing the Abbasid dynasty. The campaign also weakened Damascus, shifting Islamic influence to the Mamluk Sultanate in Cairo. He died on 8 February 1265.
