Horst Ludwig Störmer was born in Germany on April 6, 1949, and became a physicist whose career led him to Bell Labs, where the work that would define him took place. In 1998, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Daniel Tsui and Robert Laughlin for discovering the fractional quantum Hall effect — a new form of quantum fluid with fractionally charged excitations. He and Tsui had conducted the experiment at Bell Labs, uncovering behavior in matter that shouldn't have been possible under existing theory.
