4th and 5th-century Roman emperor
He was emperor when Rome fell. Not metaphorically — literally sacked in 410, the first time in eight centuries, while he ruled from a distance and the empire cracked under his feet.
Honorius became Roman emperor at eight years old in 393, younger son of Theodosius I and Aelia Flaccilla. When his father died in 395, the empire split: Honorius took the west under the regency of Stilicho, his brother Arcadius took the east. His reign was precarious and chaotic from the start. In 410, Rome was sacked for the first time since the Battle of the Allia almost 800 years prior. He held the title until his death in 423, but the west had already begun its long collapse.
