About

Hippodamus was born in Miletus around 480 BC, son of Euryphon, and worked as an architect, urban planner, physician, mathematician, meteorologist, and philosopher. His city plans imposed order and regularity on Greek settlements that had grown into tangles of confusion — even Athens. Aristotle later noted he was the first to write theory about government without any practical experience in it. The "Hippodamian plan" carries his name, though the rectangular grid itself predated him by centuries.
