Unhappily, a love of walls has seized you; unhappily, the Church of God which you venerate exists in houses and buildings; unhappily, under these you find the name of peace.
Bishop of Poitiers (c. 310 – c. 367)
A fourth-century bishop who earned the nickname "Hammer of the Arians" for his relentless theological combat against one of early Christianity's most divisive heresies.
Born around 310, Hilary married and had a daughter before his conversion to Christianity — a daughter, Abra, who would herself become a saint. Elevated to Bishop of Poitiers, he threw himself into the Arian controversy, defending the doctrine of the Trinity with such force that he became known as the "Athanasius of the West." His writings and arguments helped shape orthodox Christian thought in the Latin-speaking world. He died around 367, later named a Doctor of the Church for the precision and tenacity of his theological work.
