Grigory Valerievich Alfeyev was born 24 July 1966 and rose through the Russian Orthodox Church as both scholar and composer, publishing on dogmatic theology, patristics, and church history while writing choral and orchestral works. In 2009 he became Metropolitan of Volokolamsk and chairman of the Department for External Church Relations, a permanent seat on the Holy Synod that made him the public face of the Moscow Patriarchate abroad. That tenure ended in June 2022 when he was stripped of both titles and reassigned to the Metropolis of Budapest and Hungary. Two years later, in July 2024, he was suspended from all positions. On 27 December 2024 the church dismissed him entirely, closing a career that had moved from the lectern and the score to the centre of ecclesiastical power and back out again.
