About
Fegelein joined the Reichswehr cavalry in 1925, transferred to the SS in 1933, and oversaw equestrian preparation for the 1936 Berlin Olympics—though he failed to qualify for the team himself. After commanding cavalry in Poland, Belgium, and France, he led units on the Eastern Front in 1941 responsible for the deaths of over 17,000 civilians during the Pripyat Marshes massacres. Wounded in 1943, he was reassigned by Himmler as liaison officer to Hitler's headquarters, a post that made him present for the failed July 1944 assassination attempt.
