About

Héloïse was a French scholar and nun born around 1101, recognized early as a "woman of letters" in an age that rarely granted women that title. Her affair and collaboration with the theologian Peter Abelard produced not only a marriage but a correspondence that survives as a foundation of French literature — erudite, sometimes erotic, posing hard questions in works like the Problemata Heloissae that shaped his thinking.
