About

Héloïse was a French scholar and nun born around 1101, recognized early as a "woman of letters" in an age that rarely granted women that title. Her affair and collaboration with the theologian Peter Abelard produced not only a marriage but a correspondence that survives as a foundation of French literature — erudite, sometimes erotic, posing hard questions in works like the Problemata Heloissae that shaped his thinking. After their separation she rose within the Church, becoming abbess and eventually achieving the rank of prelate nullius in 1147, a status roughly equivalent to a bishop. Her le…
