Helmut Lethen was a German literary and cultural scholar who taught at Utrecht University from 1977 to 1985 and at the University of Rostock from 1996 to 2004. He was director of the International Research Centre for Cultural Studies in Vienna from 2007 to 2016. Lethen was known internationally for books such as Verhaltenslehren der Kälte about the Weimar Republic (1994) and Der Sound der Väter, a study of Gottfried Benn (2006).
