Born in October 1938, Fischer rose through Austria's Social Democratic Party, serving as minister for science from 1983 to 1987 before a long stretch as president of the National Council from 1990 to 2002. He suspended his SPÖ membership in 2004 when he became federal president - a post he held until 2016, navigating Austria through two terms marked by economic turbulence and shifting political winds across the continent.
