Duchess of Silesia (1174–1243)
A Bavarian countess who became a Polish duchess and, two decades after death, a Catholic saint—canonized not for ruling but for what she did after power.
Born in 1174 into the Bavarian House of Andechs, Hedwig became Duchess of Silesia in 1201 through marriage, later adding Greater Poland in 1231 and the title of High Duchess consort of Poland from 1232 to 1238. She died on 15 October 1243. Twenty-four years later, in 1267, Pope Clement IV canonized her, fixing her place in history less as a political figure than as a vessel of devotion.
