About this person

Hassanal Bolkiah Muiz'zaddin Wad'daulah was born 15 July 1946, the eldest son of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III and Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit. He became the 29th sultan of Brunei in 1967 when his father abdicated, and added the role of prime minister in 1984 when the country gained independence from British rule. The oil wealth beneath his small Southeast Asian nation made him one of the world's wealthiest individuals - estimates in 2023 put his net worth at $50 billion. In October 2017 he marked his Golden Jubilee, fifty years on the throne. He is now the world's longest-reigning current monarch and longest-serving current head of state.
