Hassanal Bolkiah Muiz'zaddin Wad'daulah was born 15 July 1946, the eldest son of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III and Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit. He became the 29th sultan of Brunei in 1967 when his father abdicated, and added the role of prime minister in 1984 when the country gained independence from British rule.
