About

Harthacnut was born around 1018, son of Cnut the Great and Emma of Normandy, heir to an empire spanning three kingdoms. When Cnut died in 1035, the inheritance fractured: Magnus I took Norway, Harthacnut held Denmark, and his half-brother Harold Harefoot claimed England. He crossed to England in 1040 after Harold's death and ruled for two years. On 8 June 1042, he collapsed at a wedding feast and died suddenly. Magnus inherited Denmark; Edward the Confessor took England. The North Sea Empire dissolved, and no Dane has worn the English crown since.
