King of Denmark and Norway
A tenth-century Danish king who forced Christianity onto his people and lent his name — centuries later — to the wireless technology that connects your devices.
Harald Gormsson inherited the throne from his father Gorm the Old around 958 and set about reshaping Denmark. He brought Christianity to a pagan kingdom and tightened his grip over Jutland and Zealand, turning scattered holdings into something closer to a unified realm. In the 970s he briefly claimed Norway after Harald Greycloak's assassination, though that control proved fragile and short-lived. His consolidation at home lasted longer, but not long enough: around 985 or 986, his own son Swein Forkbeard overthrew him and took the Danish crown. Harald died shortly after, deposed by his heir.
