About this person
Hans Moke Niemann was born June 20, 2003, and climbed the junior chess ranks fast - breaking into the top 100 on March 1, 2019, earning his grandmaster title on January 22, 2021, and taking the World Open in Philadelphia that July. Then in 2022 he defeated reigning World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen at the Sinquefield Cup, and Carlsen and Chess.com both accused him of cheating. Niemann filed a $100 million defamation suit. The case settled out of court, and in 2023 he returned to competitive chess after reconciling with both parties. By May 2026 he had reached a peak global ranking of No. 12.
