Born 14 February 1945, Hans-Adam was the eldest child of Prince Franz Joseph II and Countess Georgina von Wilczek. He attended Schottengymnasium in Austria and Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz in Switzerland, trained at a London bank, then earned a licentiate in business administration from the University of St. Gallen in 1969. In 1984 his father handed him the everyday duties of the monarchy, making Hans-Adam regent while Franz Joseph remained nominal head.
