American writer (1832–1911)
Hannah Tatum Whitall Smith was an American evangelical author, lay speaker, religious reformer, and social activist associated with the Holiness movement and the Higher Life movement. Raised as a Quaker, she became one of the most influential popularizers of Higher Life spirituality in the English-speaking Protestant world during the late nineteenth century. Her best-known work, The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life (1875), became an international devotional classic that sold more than two million copies during her lifetime.
