According to 1 Samuel, Goliath stood before the Israelite army and demanded single combat, a challenge that went unanswered until David, then a young shepherd, stepped forward. David felled him with a stone from a sling and beheaded the giant with his own sword. The story doubles as an indictment of King Saul, who failed to meet the challenge himself. Some modern scholars now argue that the original slayer may have been Elhanan, son of Jair - a figure named in 2 Samuel 21:19 as killing Goliath the Gittite - and that later editors reassigned the victory to David. Either way, the phrase "David and Goliath" outlived the text, becoming the go-to metaphor for any underdog facing long odds.
