He played professionally from 1986 to 2004, appearing for numerous clubs in Venezuela, Italy, and the United States, and earning 30 caps with the Venezuela national team. Following retirement, he served in coaching stints with New York Cosmos and Portland Timbers. He has also worked as an on-air analyst for Major League Soccer matches, appearing on ESPN from 2006 to 2017 and on Apple TV since 2023. He is now the head coach of Melbourne Victory in the Australian A-League Men.
