A Genoese mercenary who sailed into Constantinople with 700 men just as the Ottoman cannons arrived, then held the walls against impossible odds until a wound pulled him from the ramparts — and the city fell hours later.
Giovanni Giustiniani Longo was born in 1418 into Genoese nobility, but made his name as a soldier for hire. In 1453, as Mehmed II's army closed around Constantinople, Giustiniani arrived by sea with a small force of 700 and took command of the land defenses. For weeks he organized the undermanned garrison, patched crumbling fortifications, and fought off wave after wave at the walls. On June 1, 1453, he was badly wounded during the final Ottoman assault and was carried from the field. Without him the defense collapsed within hours.
