About this person
Born in Bârlad in 1901, Gheorghiu-Dej moved through the communist underground in the early 1930s and spent the war years imprisoned at Târgu Jiu, escaping only in August 1944. After King Michael's forces arrested Antonescu, Gheorghiu-Dej and prime minister Petru Groza forced the King's abdication in December 1947, ending the monarchy. As first secretary of the Romanian Workers' Party and later Prime Minister, he ran Romania as one of the Soviet Union's most obedient satellites, though Khrushchev's de-Stalinization unnerved him enough to expand trade with the West while his government committed human rights violations inside the country. He died of lung cancer in March 1965, succeeded by his protégé Nicolae Ceaușescu.
