About this person

Gerrit Rietveld was born in Utrecht on 24 June 1888 and trained as a furniture maker before turning his geometric sensibility toward architecture. His work translated the principles of the De Stijl movement - pure abstraction, primary colors, right angles - into three-dimensional objects you could sit in or live inside. The Red and Blue Chair became one of the most recognizable pieces of 20th-century design, a spatial diagram rendered in wood. He carried that clarity into his buildings, where walls became planes hovering in space and rooms opened into one another with almost no precedent. He died in Utrecht on 25 June 1964, the day after his 76th birthday.
