— Advice to Guy de Lusignan, precipitating the Battle of Hattin, 4 July 1187. From the account of Ernoul. Malcoln Barber, The New Knighthood:
Knight Templar
Grand Master of the Knights Templar who led the order during its catastrophic collapse at the Battle of Hattin in 1187, where Saladin shattered the Crusader kingdom and reclaimed Jerusalem.
Gérard de Ridefort rose to Grand Master of the Knights Templar at the end of 1184, assuming command of the most powerful military order in the Holy Land. His tenure coincided with the final years of the Kingdom of Jerusalem's precarious hold on the Levant. He died on 4 October 1189, his leadership bracket marking one of the most disastrous chapters in Crusader history.
