Summary
Updated 2026-06-08

He wrote nearly 400 novels, sold half a billion copies, and gave the world Inspector Maigret — yet what unsettled critics most was how André Gide called him "perhaps the greatest" novelist in contemporary French literature, not for the detective stories but for the merciless psychological works he called his "hard novels."
