German field marshal (1881–1968)
A Wehrmacht field marshal who commanded Army Group North on the Eastern Front, convicted at Nuremberg for war crimes committed during the invasion of the Soviet Union.
Georg Carl Wilhelm Friedrich von Küchler was born on 30 May 1881 and rose through the German military to the rank of Generalfeldmarschall during the Second World War. He commanded the 18th Army and later Army Group North in the war against the Soviet Union from 1941 to 1945. After Germany's defeat, he stood trial in the High Command Trial at Nuremberg. On 27 October 1948, he was sentenced to twenty years in prison for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed on Soviet soil. He served five years before his release in 1953, and died on 25 May 1968.
