He became King of Denmark in January 2024 when his mother abdicated after more than half a century on the throne — a rare transfer of power in a monarchy that rarely lets go early.
Born 26 May 1968, Frederik grew up as heir apparent from age three, when his mother Margrethe II took the throne in 1972. He studied political science at Aarhus University, trained across all branches of the Danish Armed Forces, and worked diplomatic posts at the UN and in Paris. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics he met Mary Donaldson, an Australian marketing consultant; they married in 2004 and had four children. After five decades his mother abdicated in January 2024, and Frederik became king.
