German painter, sculptor, printmaker, and architect (1863–1928)
A German painter who built his reputation on dark mythological visions, most famously The Sin in 1892 — a canvas that landed hard enough to carry his name for decades.
Franz Stuck was born February 23, 1863, and worked across painting, sculpture, printmaking, and architecture. His 1892 work The Sin brought him substantial critical acclaim and cemented his focus on ancient mythology as subject matter. The recognition accumulated: in 1906 he received the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown, after which he was known as Franz Ritter von Stuck. He died August 30, 1928, having spent a career rendering gods and shadows with equal weight.
