About this person
François Ruffin founded the satirical quarterly Fakir and directed the 2016 film Merci patron!, which helped spark the Nuit debout movement that spring. A year later he created the regional party Picardie Debout and won Somme's 1st constituency with backing from La France Insoumise, the Greens, and the Communists - then joined the LFI group in the Assembly, though he often broke with the line. By 2024 he was central to forging the New Popular Front alliance, but mid-campaign he severed ties with LFI and Jean-Luc Mélenchon during what he called a purge of dissenters. He scraped back into his seat and crossed to the Ecologist Group, carrying the tools of the gadfly into a parliament where no coalition holds the room.
