In 2015, he was sentenced to sixteen years in prison for multiple counts of manslaughter, causing a maritime disaster, and abandoning ship, and he began serving his sentence in 2017 after exhausting his appeals. He will be released in 2033, after 16 years of imprisonment and 21 years after the Costa Concordia disaster.
