Fouad Mebazaa

Fouad Mebazaa came up through Neo Destour before independence, then spent decades in the cabinet — Youth and Sports, Public Health, Culture and Information. In 1991 he became Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, a post he held for twenty years. When President Ben Ali fled on 15 January 2011, Mebazaa stepped into the acting presidency. He steered Tunisia through eleven months of revolutionary transition, leaving office on 13 December 2011 when the elected government took over. He died on 23 April 2025.
