King of the Two sicilies
King of the Two Sicilies for nearly three decades until his death in 1859, ruling a realm that stretched from Naples down through the island — one of the last major independent Italian states before unification remade the map.
Born Ferdinando Carlo Maria in January 1810, he inherited the throne of the Two Sicilies in 1830 while still in his twenties. For twenty-nine years he governed the southern Italian kingdom, navigating the pressures of a continent lurching toward nationalism and revolution. He died in May 1859, just as the forces that would dissolve his realm into a unified Italy gathered speed around him.
