Born in Beijing in 1969, she moved to Hong Kong at 18 and debuted in 1989 under the name Shirley Wong. The 1992 Cantopop hit "Fragile Woman" was the break, but she soon pushed past formula - blending alternative textures with Chinese pop and switching to Mandarin by the late 1990s. Wong Kar-wai cast her in Chungking Express in 1994 and 2046 a decade later, roles that carried her cool, distant presence to festival screens. By March 2000 she had sold an estimated 9.7 million albums; Guinness named her the best-selling Cantopop female that year. She married again in 2005, left the spotlight, and moved back to Beijing, surfacing only occasionally since. In 2009 a state poll marking 60 years of the People's Republic drew seven million votes and placed her second among the most influential Chinese celebrities of the era.
