German field marshal (1881–1944)
A Wehrmacht field marshal who tried to kill Hitler. Erwin von Witzleben was the designated commander in chief for a post-Nazi Germany — if the 20 July plot had worked. It didn't.
Job Wilhelm Georg Erwin Erdmann von Witzleben was born 4 December 1881 and rose to Generalfeldmarschall in the Wehrmacht, commanding the western front during the Second World War. He became a leading conspirator in the 20 July plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, the coup that would have installed him as commander in chief of the armed forces. The plot failed. He was dishonourably discharged by the Ehrenhof, dragged before the Volksgerichtshof for a show trial, and murdered on 8 August 1944.
