Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was born on 6 May 1880. He co-founded Die Brücke — "The Bridge" — an artists group that became a cornerstone of 20th-century Expressionism. He volunteered for army service in the First World War but suffered a breakdown and was discharged. In 1933 the Nazis labeled his work "degenerate." In 1937 more than 600 of his works were sold or destroyed. He died on 15 June 1938.
