About this person

Born in Amiens in 1977, Macron studied philosophy at Paris Nanterre, earned a master's at Sciences Po, and graduated from the École nationale d'administration in 2004 before working at the General Inspectorate of Finance and later as an investment banker at Rothschild & Co. He joined President François Hollande's team as a senior adviser after the 2012 election, rising to Economics Minister in 2014, where he pushed business-friendly reforms before resigning in 2016 to found En Marche and mount a presidential bid. In May 2017, aided by the Fillon affair, he took 66% of the runoff against Marine Le Pen, becoming the youngest president in French history and delivering his new party a legislative majority weeks later. His presidency brought labour, tax, and pension reforms that earned him the label "president of the rich" and triggered the 2018-2020 yellow vests protests and pension strikes; he later steered France through COVID-19, brokered EU treaties with Germany and Italy, and navigated trade friction with China and a security rift with Australia over AUKUS.
