Emílio Joaquim da Silva Maia was a Brazilian medical doctor and naturalist who founded the Vellosiana Society which ran the first journal in the region that carried notes on natural history, O Guanabara. He was also one of the founders of the Brazilian Historic and Geographic Institute.
