About this person

Martínez spent a decade in Arsenal's shadow after arriving from Independiente in 2010, loaned out repeatedly before finally claiming the starting spot in 2019 and helping win an FA Cup. Aston Villa paid £20 million for him in September 2020, where he set a club record with fifteen Premier League clean sheets in his debut season and later lifted the UEFA Europa League. His senior Argentina call-up came in 2021, and he immediately seized the moment - winning the 2021 Copa América with the Golden Glove, then backstopping the 2022 World Cup triumph where he was again voted best goalkeeper, and repeating the feat at the 2024 Copa América for a third tournament award. He became the first goalkeeper to win The Best FIFA Goalkeeper twice, in 2022 and 2024, and matched Donnarumma with two Yashin Trophies in 2023 and 2024.
