Deputy Prime Minister of Romania and wife of dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu, she held the country in joint grip until the 1989 revolution ended with both their executions on Christmas Day.
Born Elena Petrescu on 7 January 1919, she married Nicolae Ceaușescu as he rose through the Romanian Communist Party to become General Secretary and leader of the Socialist Republic. She obtained a doctorate in chemistry and climbed to Deputy Prime Minister, wielding power alongside her husband. When the Romanian Revolution swept through in December 1989, the regime collapsed. On 25 December, she and Nicolae were executed together.
