About

Born in 1945 to a Herut politician, Olmert entered the Knesset for Likud at 28 in 1973, served stints as health minister and minister without portfolio, then won Jerusalem's mayoralty in 1993 for two consecutive terms. He returned to national politics in 2003, climbing to acting finance minister before joining Ariel Sharon's dramatic 2005 exit from Likud to form Kadima. When Sharon suffered a debilitating stroke in January 2006, Olmert stepped in as acting prime minister, then won the leadership and formed a government that March.
