Biography

About

Born in Nyack, New York, on July 22, 1882, to a middle-class family that encouraged his early interest in art, Hopper studied at the New York School of Art under William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri, developing a style built on solitude, light, and shadow. His career advanced slowly, but by the 1920s his oil paintings, watercolors, and etchings — set in New York's architectural grid or the serene stretches of New England — began appearing in major American museums. In 1924 he married fellow artist Josephine Nivison, who managed his career and modeled for many of his works; the couple lived m…
