French painter (1849-1928)
A decorated war veteran who became the Belle Époque's most sought-after illustrator of erotic literature, working under a pseudonym that kept polite society and his government medal in separate rooms.
Édouard-Henri Avril was born on 21 May 1849 and first made his mark as a soldier in the Franco-Prussian War, earning the Legion of Honour for his actions in combat. After leaving military life, he turned to art and commercial illustration, eventually carving out a second career under the pseudonym Paul Avril. As Paul Avril, he illustrated erotic literature, becoming one of the era's most accomplished artists in a genre that required both technical skill and discretion. He continued working until his death on 28 July 1928, having spent decades moving between the respectable and the clandestine.
