About this person
Đurađ Branković took the Serbian throne in 1427, the first of his dynasty to rule, and in 1429 received the formal Byzantine title of Despot from Emperor John VIII Palaiologos. He built the Smederevo Fortress as his capital, turned it into a center of Serbian culture stocked with manuscripts in four languages, and spent decades as an Ottoman vassal who quietly worked to strengthen Christian alliances without breaking cover. In 1456 he risked everything defending Belgrade against Mehmed II's army of 60,000 with a force of 3,000 knights. He died that December, and Serbia, Bosnia, and Albania fell to the Sultan soon after.
