He hit harder than almost anyone on tour, claimed a major in New York as the first man born in the 1990s to do it, then watched a wrist injury take the rest. The last one-handed backhand to lift a Grand Slam trophy.

About this person

Dominic Thiem, born 3 September 1993 in Austria, climbed from junior world No. 2 to the pro top 100 by 2014, won his first ATP title in Nice in 2015, and cracked the top ten after reaching the 2016 French Open semifinals. He took a Masters 1000 crown at Indian Wells in 2019 by beating Roger Federer, then reached four major finals in three years - losing the 2018 and 2019 French Opens and the 2020 Australian Open before breaking through at the 2020 US Open to become only the second Austrian man to win a singles major. A wrist injury in 2021 derailed him for good; he never recovered the form that had pushed him to world No. 3, and he retired after the 2024 Vienna Open. His game was built on crushing groundstrokes from both wings and a serve that touched 145 mph, and he remains the last player with a one-handed backhand to win a Grand Slam title in singles.
