Spanish conquistador
A Spanish conquistador whose partnership with Pizarro in carving up the Inca Empire ended in a civil war over Cuzco — defeated at Las Salinas in 1538, then executed by the brothers who'd once stood beside him.
Diego de Almagro rode into Peru with Francisco Pizarro to subdue the Inca Empire, founding Quito and Trujillo as Spanish strongholds along the way. He pushed south from Peru to lead the first Spanish military expedition into central Chile, extending the reach of conquest. But the partnership soured over control of Cuzco, the old Inca capital, and what had been an alliance became a civil war between rival bands of conquistadores. At the battle of Las Salinas in 1538, the Pizarro brothers crushed him. Months later they had him executed.
