King of the Lombards from 756 to 774
The last king of the Lombards, remembered less for what he built than for who dismantled it: his son-in-law Charlemagne, who married his daughter then wiped his kingdom off the map.
Born around 720, Desiderius took the Lombard throne in 756 and ruled northern Italy for eighteen years. At some point he gave his daughter in marriage to the Frankish king Charlemagne — a bond that didn't hold. In 774 Charlemagne invaded, conquered the realm, and ended Lombard kingship for good. Desiderius lived another dozen years in defeat, dying around 786, the man who closed a chapter he couldn't rewrite.
